Consistency is Key… But the Lock Keeps Changing

The threat to consistency isn’t my laziness. It’s the universe.

James Clear goes on and on about how consistency is the key to success in his bestseller, Atomic Habits.

So does every other self-help guru, by the way.

And I agree. Consistency is the key. But, the problem is the biggest blocker to this consistency is not my laziness. Not my procrastination.

I’ve set my goal to be consistent in hitting the gym this year.

But it has been an inconsistent battle so far.

And the inconsistency is not because I didn’t want to. In the last one month, I have hit gym for two weeks. And the other two weeks, I didn’t.

Here’s why.

The first week, I had to visit my parents and go to my hometown.

I don’t have a gym subscription there. Now, now, I know you are going to tell me I could have still exercised. Sure, but we are talking about habits. Going to the gym was not possible there, and home workouts are not something I could bring myself to. (I know you are laughing at this as laziness.) But I think it’s external factors that are stopping me.

What about another skipped week?

Well, this week I’m down with flu. Before you go all David Goggins on me that I should’ve still hit up the gym, calm down. I’m a drama queen when faced with a flu. Also, as I age and in a post-Covid world, it takes me quite a long period of time to recover from even as small as a flu.

There goes my another week.

And not to mention, I most likely have lost my muscle mass for this cold and cough. Which sets me back for a month or two.

And the laziness will actually kick in once I recover since I’ve lost the habit of hitting the gym this week.

Well, damn this inconsistency.
